Self Timer
I find that when you set the camera up for a long exposure, especially if
it's not on a tripod and you're just setting on a table or whatnot, that it's
best to use the self timer. This way the little bit of movement you
produce when you press the shutter button doesn't effect the picture. I
know you mentioned remotes, but every camera has a self timer.
