Understanding the importance of photo composition

The sample photo isn't that good...

The interesting thing in this picture is the weed flower. (I've photographed such plants myself.) There is nothing to balance or offset the flower, so there's no point in placing it off-center.

More to the point... The interesting thing about this plant is the seeds themselves and their unusual shape. This should have been an extreme closeup with the seeds filling the frame.
