Excellent post. I agree with just about everything that you wrote, particularly the following:

There comes a tipping point in any large commercial sector Enterprise where the market for the flagship product or service becomes saturated. At this juncture, the revenue growth challenge becomes less about attracting and delighting new customers but rather about sucking as much money out of existing customers as possible.

I believe that we may have reached that point in many areas. Recent vendor tactics surrounding support fees buttress your argument. Why many vendors would attempt to antagonize their clients (regardless of how a raise in support fees is spun) during a down economy with open source and SaaS becoming viable is beyond me.
