Large vendors can, but will they?
Steve Lohr at NY Times had a similar point this weekend that big companies have more of an ability to invest in innovation - and I responded below.

With some exceptions like Intel, Apple, Google the trend in tech has been to milk existing product and do lifecycle extension not cannibalize with new products, even when newer products are more efficient for customers - and often themselves. Wall Street, smart as it is, is often amazingly uneducated when it comes to new product and revenue cycles and ties vendors to older models too long.
