Business Value
The "fuss and rumble about making IT demonstrate business value" is a direct result of years of IT *not* demonstrating business value. There are two possible reasons for this: either the value isn't there, or the value is there but no one has bothered to calculate it. Either way, we have a problem.

Brian Sommers' piece quotes Lee Iacocca:

?So we invest in the computers and in training personnel - millions of dollars, thousands of hours - but we never go back and check on whether we saved ourselves even one person?I?ve signed so many projects that by now I should have nobody left.?

That sums it up pretty nicely. If IT lived up to the hype, we'd all be working Jetsons hours and letting computers do the rest.
