Personally, I would not choose to store that information on a laptop in the first place. But you must have missed the part where it says:

"The laptop was protected by a number of security measures, including start up password, operating system user ID/password authentication and encryption."

It doesn't say what type of encryption etc was used, but assuming that encryption was implemented properly there is no reason to think "the sky is falling".
