No, I don't trust Google BUT...
I trust Google more than I trust me. There is a bigger chance that I'll lose my own data than Google will. I don't have the energy (nor do I choose to spend the money) to constantly backup all of my data onto removable storage and store those backups off site.

When given 2 imperfect options, you choose the least flawed so I choose Google. My data is safer with Google than it is with me.

The second thing to consider is security and I'm not even talking about the security of your data. I actually did run my own IMAP server with external web access for a while but as above, I don't have the energy to keep up to date with every vulnerability that affects Apache. By keeping all data I want external access to on Google servers, I let Google open up their ports and my home network stays sealed shut.

I'm not suggesting that Google is for everyone, you have to make your own decisions but most people should think about backups and security and ask themselves who can do a better job of staying on top of these things. If you can, then do it! If not, your data is probably safer with Google. Don't, however, do it yourself and then get lazy with backups and security, you aren't doing yourself any favors.
