IT departments are anti-nimble
IT departments by their very structure and responsibilities
are unable to be nimble. They have been required to
develop, manage and maintain large & complex systems
with high levels of reliability and resilience. This mindset
and process orientation works against any kind of agile or
nimble approaches. It also means that the people in IT
departments have KPIs that match this mindset. While the
individual people in IT depts may favour more nimble
approaches they know that it will be unlikely to find favour
and help them to meet their KPIs. Also the procurement
and provisioning capabilities in most IT depts are
predicated on long timelines and payback periods.
Economies of scale have been the focus of corporate IT for
a long time now. It is hard for them to move away from
this model. Although, I do think that there is business
appetite to move away from this klunky old model.
