Australian Senator Kate Lundy is on target about software
Senator Kate Lundy is very well placed to make the comments she made - and to be heard where it matters. She is a Senator for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) which was created as a separate territory for the national capital, Canberra. So she is in the loop (inside the beltway, if you will) with the public servants, politicians, consultants and others who deal with these issues, write the policies, tenders and contracts and know the insider stories. She was also for some time the then Opposition (now Government) spokesperson on Communications and is seen by people in the IT/multimedia/Internet sector as a knowledgeable person and a "player" in the sector - she even had a blog before they became popular. It would be interesting to know whether these are her opinions mainly or whether she is flying a kite for one or more Government ministers who don't want to be seen to be taking a position in conflict with the big software providers. And no doubt the software giants are in turn watching to see how this plays out. After all, if the new Australian government changes the rules it might give some other countries dangerous ideas, mightn't it?!
