Agreed ... except on one point
Hard to argue with all of that, Michael. Independent
analysts seem more open to full disclosure (ie http://blogs.zdnet.com/Gardner/?page_id=2461), but
then they have full control over their policies. And they
have more need to remain fully open to survive.

And for the very largest analyst firms, simply assume they
are being paid in some form by all vendors with a
marketing budget. By getting paid by most or all vendors
actually makes it less likely for them to favor any one.
Ironic that the largest and smallest of the IT analyst firms
may be the most independent and/or open by nature.

I do differ on your (and Jon Collins') point on it being questionable for "the analysts that use a briefing as an
opportunity to pitch their own services."

The analyst is the service. He or she is pitching themselves
simply by opening their mouths and demonstrating their
knowledge, insights, and thought leadership. Even their
questions show their merit. The analysts job is to foster
understanding, probe for more information, and to share it
usefully.

I can't see how any analyst in a briefing can avoid the
purported ?unsavory and unproductive? practice of pitching
themselves unless they remain mute. More unsavory, to
me, are those analysts that will not offer any feedback in a
briefing unless they are already being paid by the vendor.
