Yes, Treece is pretty much a toxic wasteland. But instead of ranting about the blowing off of mountaintops, clear-cutting forests, plowing up the prairie, and providing a link to an informationless NYT blurb, why don't you actually *talk* about Treece?
Why not tell some of the story of *why* the town is a toxic wasteland? Or are you so mal-informed that you don't know anything about it? Since I live in south central KS, I've seen many of the news reports about Treece. Here, allow me to give you a bit of knowledge:
Treece is a former mining town. When it was first settled, the mining company was digging lead out of the area. You know, that dense, heavy metal that we *now* understand is toxic to most organic life. But back in the Olde Days, lead was useful for making things like batteries, water pipes, bullets, toy soldiers, paints, and hundreds of other items used daily.
What *wasn't* known at the time was the toxicity of the material itself, nor the toxicity of the mine tailings that were left behind. Eventually, lead leeched back into the water table through the actions of Mother Nature--rain. The lead poisoned the water supply, but not so badly that it was immediately noticeable.
But over the years, the lead concentration became so great that it has now been shown that it only takes a short while of consuming the well water in Treece to contaminate and affect humans and animals, especially young ones.
*That* is why the residents asked the EPA to study and eventually recommend a governmental buyout of the town. It did, and it has. This is a Good Thing.
If you want to place all of the blame on human greed (the mining company and its owners, *not* the residents of Treece), be my guest. I can't stop you. After all, socialists *hate* capitalists with all their black, flabby hearts.
But if you're going to spread about some of your hate, kindly tell the *truthful* part of the story, 'kay?
