Cinderblock
Many years ago a product called cinderblock was made from coal fire
residue. It was similar to standard concrete block. In many cases,
over time, it proved far less satisfactory. One big problem was
degradation in a wet environment. It would get sort of mushy and soft
over time.

I don;t know if they just used the cinders as substitute for gravel or if
more was involved, but I've seen that degradation happen in walls
about 50 years old and faster when those wall's came in contact with
the ground.

I will take exception to the brick people's disparagement of asbestos
shingles. They proved to be an exceptionally long lasting and cost
effective siding that posed little environmental hazard to the public.
Cutting and installation did not involve sawing so duct was not
created. Unlike today's vinyl, they were not subject to expansion and
contraction problems, requiring large expansion gaps where water
gets in behind the siding.
