Another example of one size not fitting all
While there are numerous issues with the Waxman-Markey bill, something Harry wrote highlights the ignorance many people approach policy in the United States. I have been to Eurpoe and love their public transportation systems and which the US could make improvements in its own. But such systems are literally impossible in most of the midwest. A certain population density is required for them to become even remotely feasible (even if gas was $5-6 like many hope...and may happen if this bill passes in its current form). It isn't an issue of motivation, or stuborn conservatives clinging to their old ways. It simply can't be done.

The result is simply going to be sever economic harm...with nearly the same gas being used (the midwest, reliant on the trucks and SUV's the elites condemn, is inelastic to gas prices...because we have to use them, not like to, have to). Food prices will increase, as will our electricity prices (far more than many urban areas, which have a populatin denisty enough to afford more efficient alternatives). Rural American is reliant on small coal powerplants, the kind that will be hardest hit from this bill (if it is not watered down).

Geographically we are the size of Europe, with a much more varied population density. To believe that we can apply the same 'solution' to our entire country is insane...and will result in more harm than good.
