Well...
To say that soil moisture doesn't affect convection would be a lie... but it is a very small effect compared to the large-scale circulation. The primary driver of the rainy-season weather is the formation of semi-permanent pressure cells, such as the subtropical ridge across the Southeast US. A major driver in the formation of these systems is the ocean temperature and currents, which are cyclic, complex, and impossible to predict in the long term.
