Silly thing about investors
They want a guarantee of a return. And unfortunately this alternative energy thing is a tough nut to crack. The only forms of energy that seem to work reliably and cheaply (other than burning things) are wind, which is still not so reliable because the weather is unreliable, and geothermal, which is limited to only certain places on the planet. Oh, and nuclear fission, which like the stuff we burn has a limited supply source and gives you nasty side products.

So we'll continue to burn things until we run out of things to burn. Maybe then there will be enough incentive to take the risky plunge into research with no guarantee of success.
