Related question - in-house refurbishing
A related question is in-house refurbishing. Bumping memory up to 256/512 MB and replacing a 1 MHz processor with a 2.4, all bought used "pulled from working machines" can breathe new life into old machines. Often, just wiping and reinstalling Windows can do wonders.

Granted, when you consider that you can get machines WITH WIN XP for $120, it may not make sense to refurbish in-house.
