- Virtual Journalism Summit is a Great Example
-
Last night I attended the 1st Virtual Journalism Summit, sponsored by The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, in partnership with the McCormick Foundation. Co-speakers for this event were Former White House Bureau Chief Helen Thomas and CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent Bob Schieffer.
The event was held simultaneously at the physical and virtual Pullman campuses of Washington State University. The virtual Pullman campus is located in Second Life, a 3D Virtual World.
If I had been required to physically travel to Washington for this event, I would likely not have attended. The same can probably be said for many of my fellow virtual attendees from all over the globe.
During this event, as well as the hundreds of other meetings I have attended and held in Second Life, I truly engaged and in the "presence" of the other people involved. This is a major difference to the more sterile, two dimensional Go-To-Meeting type virtual meetings many of us are used to.
At this same event, Second Life Phillip Rosedale (Linden) described technology he is working on that will capture our emotive expressions via webcam and embody them in our avatar. This, when combined with existing integrated voice (VOIP) technology, will give users of Virtual Worlds like Second Life the tools necessary to replicate the essential non-verbal and verbal communication elements, essential for doing business. Couple these with "real-time" translation and you have an extremely compelling platform for global business collaboration.
I believe that the combination of advances in Virtual World technology and the pressure to reduce both monetary and environmental costs, will continue to accelerate the adoption of virtual meeting technology. I invite anyone interested in learning more about this to drop by my office in Second Life. The virtual coffee is always on!
