Really a shame that a blog which started well gets tained by fear mongering:
Gypsum is used in wallboard globally. It?s a naturally-occuring, very soft mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate, CaSO4?2H2O. Note there?s a sulphur ion there. Any impurities that cause the gypsum to decompose?.
Yes - there is a sulphur atom in there - so what. This is the calcium salt of sulphuric acid. You could pour cencentrated acid on the stuff - it wouldn't change a bit - no matter what impurities are in there as well. Chemically you need some very strong reducing agent to turn it into H2S.
Two of the natural amino acids which make up all of our proteins contain sulphur as well - and turning this into H2S is chemically a lot simpler. You wouldn't go out and warn everyone to stop eating meat - beware - contains sulphur.
But wait a moment - lets mix gypsum with meat. Add some humidity - and with some luck decomposition would turn into H2S - but it wouldn't be the sulphur in the sulphate responsible for the bad smell - the cause are the impurities themselve (in this case it would be the meat).
Eggs would work even better - after all - H2S is what makes up the distinctive smell of rotten eggs. And the whole problem is - the sulphur in the eggs is not in there in the form of sulphate. Eventually the oxygen in the air will oxidize it to sulphate - and by that time the smell will have stopped.
