Invention first - then innovation
Thomas Edison invented hundreds (if not thousands) of things. Many of them were the start of major industries (as evidenced by utility companies that still bear his name). Henry Ford was a close friend of Edison (and other inventors), and he went on "camping" trips with them.

So it SHOULD come as no surprise that Ford was such a leader in the auto industry. Henry knew that the lifeblood of a company is innovation, and the best way to keep that going was to associate with the greatest minds of the day.

Today, Google has tried to do this with their multi-year hiring binge. But their results (so far) don't come close to Henry. Everything I see from Google is "ho-hum" also-ran knockoff copying - not innovation.

From a personal standpoint, it's HARD to get people to notice innovation for what it is. Innovation can come from anywhere - but must be fostered for it to work. This is where the problem comes in as rival management drones fight to get political power - and innovation threatens the "balance".

Today the inventor is "The Messenger" and is treated as such by uninterested and uncaring corporate structure. Gone are the days when the CEO and owner of one of the world's largest corporations goes on camping trips with inventors. Has Meg Whitman or Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates ever BEEN on a camping trip?
