Railroad has a strong future - for carrying heavy cargo and containers. Use of trucks is far less fuel efficient, though faster.

I don't think rail has much future as a transport of people - the U.S. is too large. High speed rail is good for distances up to 500 miles, which is what you find in densely packed areas such as Europe or Japan. And if you actually came close to competing with airlines, then you'd need railway stations with the same scale of parking and traffic/baggage handling as an airport.

Now, if somehow one could book a rail trip at high speed somewhere, but also carry your car with you, I'd be really interested in that. Perhaps if smaller cars become more popular, that might someday become an option. It's pretty unlikely I admit, but I'd take the train in that case.
