@"Let's see: the three US automobile manufacturers, the ones which created, designed, engineered, tested, manufactured (with so many parts from off-shore), marketed, and sold at demand prices the monstrosities called SUVs"
You know, I *HATE* the SUVs just as much as you, but look around you. See them on the road? How many do you see? 50% of all vehicles? The public obviously wanted them, and bought them, and STILL buy them (although less of them now), so that particular blame cannot be laid 100% at the feet of the auto makers. The foreign companies produced them too, and they sold just as nicely. But that was then, and this is now. That era is OVER. What you CAN blame the US auto industry of is not having enough insight to have a mix of other vehicles for when the bottom fell out of that market. For that, I offer them NO sympathy, nor do I feel they deserve any of my tax dollars. They can rot for all I care, and the unions too.
I am the previous owner of a 2003 Saturn LW200 wagon. This has to be, hands down, the worst car I ever owned, and I'm glad to be rid of it. With it's "small" 2.2l 4cy engine, it guzzled on average 24mpg and had a range of about 300 miles (the sticker rated it at 24 city, 32 highway. I never got over 25mpg per tank regardless of driving conditions or style). It required several electrical repairs, including a "body control computer". I hated that car and regretted I ever bought it. It was my second Saturn, and I had hoped to repeat the great experience I had with my first Saturn, a SW100 wagon. My first Saturn went 225k miles over 11 years, got on average 30mpg on it's 1.9 or 2.0l engine, was smaller, lighter, and all around a better car. The difference? The first Saturn was "A different kind of car, a different kind of car company". The second Saturn was just another GM product - the magic was gone, I should have seen it during the buying process.
What do I drive now? A Prius. Bye Bye Detroit, no more of your crap. I now get 45-50mpg on average and I love this car. - Posted by: WindowWasher Posted on: 12/01/08 (Edited: 12/01/2008 @ 07:09) You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
