The 800-lb gorilla in the room is that when huge, entrenched US business sectors are allowed to fail there will have negative repercussions far beyond the momentary self-righteous glow that comes from cutting off a few greedy CEOs.

Lots of people recognize this and opt for having the government take over for awhile as a condition of any corporate bailouts. Only problem is, the folks in government barely function already. They live off tax money and know NOTHING of what might be needed to run a real business that must compete successfully worldwide for customers in the marketplace.

Fortunately, in the US anyway, there are lots of people who DO have the necessary skills. Its just that nobody has ever heard of them. The media ignors them and the old-boy network isn't interested. These folks are already hard at work running small, successful businesses everywhere.

What's needed is a crash effort to tap this talent pool immediately. Kick out the trash at the helm of our stumbling automotive works and financial houses. Unleash the fresh blood.

Begin by breaking up the "big three" automakers into five or ten brand-new independent car companies that MUST compete with each other and with offshore vendors. Even if only three or four make it, we are all way ahead of the game because competative, world-class technology (and the jobs that go with it) will end up right here in the US. Sure there will be feathers ruffled. Probably lots of feathers will be ground up and burned away forever. So what.

Use this same basic formula whenever a really big business gets itself in deep trouble and (effectively) says: "bail me out or I bring you down with me." Just might work. And could inspire many others to avoid the abyss.

The other options I see on the table right now have PROCRASTINATION and FAILURE written all over them. Paths we dare not consider seriously.
