There has been many great alternatives, and propane is one of them. But how can it ever get into the mainstream?

When you think outside the box, you always get run over by somebody.

A case comes to mind in Massachusetts where someone wanted to power their own home, so he tried to put up a wind turbine. The state then decided he would be an energy producer, so they could tax him as such. It no longer was feasible to become energy independent.

The same people who push energy independence are the same people who will not allow it to happen.

I would say even if this happened tomorrow the heavy gas taxes would be shifted to propane taxes so it does not make any sense anymore.
