Considering that people on Craigslist are routinely paying $250 for a used 4 gig iPhone, you're an economic sloth if you do this.

This continues to be one of the great issues with recycling of most kinds. The economic incentive for the companies is great, but for the consumer is nearly valueless. And no matter what the people who try to guilt your conscience about how you're causing the ultimate demise of the world and civilization itself say, most people will base their actions on whether it is beneficial for them - not some abstract moral plea.
