Coal in Tampa Bay
We've got coal here as well. Since moving here, they've put scrubbers on it and other sort of things to clean the exhaust. It's not my favorite type of power generation, but it has the benefit of buffering electrical price hikes from the natural gas plants in the area.

As long as the plant is required to clean its exhaust, I don't mind living near one.

I mean, if we're going to measure the NIMBY factor of various types of energy and use that as a measure for whether a given plant makes sense, we all better learn to do without any power at all.

Coal and Nuclear are right out. Wind kills birds. Natural Gas is pulled from rigs off the sunny beaches of Florida and California. Burning wood produces CO2 and kills trees. Middle Eastern Oil has been a source of violent conflict for decades. etc, etc, etc.

There is no perfect source of energy. Everything has some sort of messy chemical byproduct and environmental impact. Even solar.

There's coal in Virginia. So they're using a local product to make energy for local citizens who will work in those facilities. Seems to me like that captures all the costs and benefits within the same community. How's that a bad thing?
