Not buying it Harry. People didn't buy the more efficient vehicles because they were not marketed with the same "sexy" fervor as the larger and less efficient ones. That is a fact. Almost every car commercial or advertisement was about going fast, horsepower and pulling power. Until recently you didn't hear much about fuel economy.

Another fact is the web site you linked to even states that until 2000 there were only 12 economical models to choose from, and odds are they were more expensive and came with fewer options than their gas guzzling cousins. That's a pretty slim selection when you look at the sheer number of models available any given year.

No, the blame really does lie with the automotive industry. They failed to market the more efficient vehicles properly. They played on peoples ignorance and weak ego to sell "FAST, POWERFUL and BIGGER PAYLOAD!" and people bought what they were led to believe would make them safer and better. But the insurance statistics bear an ugly truth, a truth that the automotive industry doesn't want you to know. On top of being inefficient, the larger vehicles that were aggressively marketed as safer, were actually more dangerous!

Peoples false sense of security (kind of like the TSA!) opened up Pandora's box of idiot driving and people would stop wearing seat belts... don't need them, I have a big vehicle! People stopped using turn signals... don't need them, I have a big vehicle! Stopped looking where they were going... don't need to, I have a big vehicle. And they started taking chances they wouldn't in a smaller (and still safe by the way...) vehicle.

The bottom line, it's a lie the whole damn thing. But peoples egos sure were stroked, and they sure were enjoying the ego boost! And now look at what's happening. The I told you so's are having a field day and the people with huge egos in need of assuaging with trinkets and a false sense of status are wondering how they are going to get their next ego fix.

No, a lot of people have been screaming for fuel efficient vehicles for a long time... problem is they were not available when we wanted them, and when they were they were over priced for the tiny improvement in economy which didn't make the pay back worth while. Just another corporate lie. devil
