It's reckoned by some that all of 4% of the food problem can bet attributed to biofuels. Crop failures around the world (especially Australia, India and now Burma/Myanmar) are a much larger contributor and biofuels wouldn't contribute at all if fallow land was used instead of certain governments stealing farmland from peasants and rainforest being used.

It's also important to note that it's not just how much more food people in 'developing' countries are eating, but what they're eating that counts. An increase in meat consumption contributes hugely to the amount of land required to feed food animals.

The housing crisis in the UK is equally artificial. There is a large amount of uninhabited housing in the UK (always has been, this suits certain landlords wishing to keep rent high) and, even where this is not the case, plenty of derelict factories and warehouses which could be replaced, removing the need to build on greenfield sites and improving the area immensely by removing old eyesores which attract arsonists.
