If you follow the trail to the original research, it was actually a study on mice who were given large quantities of the chemical directly.

As far as I know, however, the studies on humans are not quite as conclusive. The bottles are releasing a relatively minute amount into the much larger human body, and if I'm reading correctly, the digestive system neutralizes most of it as well. So it's pretty unknown whether this is really the huge threat the newspapers are making it out to be.

I'm not saying it's harmless though - just that we have to be careful about jumping to conclusions too quickly. We really don't have the necessary research to reach a definitive conclusion.
