E-ink and audio books also help
First of all, I'm not so sure that books are really the biggest cause of problems.

But if you really want to avoid the paper form of books, you can always get an E-Ink reader like Amazon.com's Kindle, or get an audio book from audible.com.

Usually colleges will buy back books at the end of the semester, so I'm not sure if chegg.com will really become popular at all.

In addition, you can always recycle paper, so just use some common sense and find a good recycling center nearby.
