I have being very vocal against biofuels for years. And I'm not the only person in this planet.
The truth is bio-fuels are the BIGGEST environmental threat of the near future.
Why you ask:
#1- You are destroying a food source to fuel highly INEFFICIENT vehicles. The best you can get out of bio-fuels is 20 MPGs, and that is if you are lucky since the average is about 14 MPG. Also for those who don't know, adding 10% ethanol to normal fuel (mandated by law during winter in various states)drops 20-25% of the efficiency of an engine.
#2- Even with technology improvements, the process and energy required to create bio-fuels generate double the pollution that the bio-fuel save.
#3- Because bio-fuels can become more profitable, many farmers will change their crops to exclusive fuel farms. That will cause a surge in the cost of food, increasing the cost of living. That means that the poor will now have a harder time paying for food. Also the cost of medication will skyrocket (worst than today) because the "source" of the chemicals (plants, vegis, etc.) will cost more.
#4- Since the crops are "not for human consumption", farmers will be free to use what ever pesticides they want. Those chemicals will eventually end up in the underground water reserves contaminating the local water sources. That means the contamination of not only the local drinking water, but also the local wildlife and flora.
#5- Bio-engineering of new crops that can generate more fuel for less, will eventually end up contaminating other crops. Based on historical legal facts, we know that although the contamination is not the fault of the farmer, they will end up in court charged with stealing "intellectual property", forcing them out of the farming business and eventually causing additional harm to the food supply (ie: higher cost for food). And lets not talk about the fact that the contaminated crops WILL end up as food.
#6- Greed will also contaminate the food source. Anybody really belive that all the biproducts of bio-fuels will be discrarted?? Not a chance. We already know that any left over will be process into either human food (like cereal), "organic" food for crops, cattle feed or even pet food.
The preceding was just a small example of how dangerous bio-fuels are to our environment. I can give you more reasons, but I think I made my point.
Bio-fuels are a worst solution than the problem. - Posted by: wackoae Posted on: 03/26/08 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
