Nuclear water use
As a pro-nuclear blogger working at Idaho Samizdat http://djysrv.blogspot.com, I get the question all the time about water use. It's important to note you walked into a current controversy over water use by nuclear plants due to an AP article that has some problems. NEI has a response here http://neinuclearnotes.blogspot.com/2008/01/what-ap-story-on-water-use-and-nuclear.html

Second, nuclear plants use water in one of two ways.

First, a "once through" cycle returns almost all the water taken in albeit much warmer than before. This is where nuclear plants get into trouble because their water quality permits set the maximum temperature for the return water flow. If it gets too hot then the plant can't operate. It is a regulatory matter, not a technical one. Hot water above a certain temperature kills aquatic wildlife so that's why the permit has a condition about.

Second, for plants that use cooling towers, about 5% of the water used goes into the atmosphere as evaporation and rest returns to the ground.

In terms of nasty comments that you received, on the two nuclear blogs that I'm involved with (write one, manage another for a client) I have this policy on comments.

"All comments are moderated. Comments which add something constructive pro or con to the dialog are valued. Please be brief and be polite. You are welcome to post a link to additional information. Spam and off-topic comments will not be published."

Hopefully this text or something like it will work for you.
