LED's are the path of future lighting
that and bio-luminescence. Currently the LED technology is exploding, the little power miser lights are getting brighter and a broader color range. There are currently bulbs for indoor use, while very expensive AND limited currently in application, they are moving forward. But factor in a life span of 10+ years! And since they require so little power to operate it's a double savings.

As for outside use, Santa Cruz, Monterey and several other California cities have replaced all of their street lights with LED technology. And they are brighter than the conventional lights while consuming only a fraction of the power. Also it has reduced light replacements and maintenance that is time consuming and another additive to pollution.
