- Big Blue is still blue
-
In the last year, we have been having power issues with our servers and our colo. We only get two 20 amp circuits per cabinet. We have standardized on HP Proliant DL380's and DL580's ranging from G3 to G5. We can only fill about half of our cabinets with servers as anymore will blow the circuits. The DL380's pull about 3 to 5 amps. The DL580's pull about 8 to 10 amps. That's per power supply, so having redundant power supplies eats the 2nd 20 amp circuit equally.
Then all of this marketing noise about Big Blue going green in Boulder and how their cool blue was going to change everything, this really got us excited! Enough to get us thinking that we could change our HP Standardization to IBM.
We started doing our research and found that Sun was actually leading the market in power consumption or lack of power consumption and HP was the biggest hog. We heard that HP was not going to start taking proactive moves to watch power usage until their G7 units. Big time bummer! We kept reading more about IBM and things were sounding good.
Then we started making calls to our vendors. They all were telling us the same thing. We would not see that much of a difference in power consumption moving from HP to IBM or Dell. While the IBM?s and Dell?s definitely consume less power, it?s not that big of a difference to the point where we could fill an entire 40u cabinet with servers.
Back to the drawing board. It sounds like this marking hype is just that. While it might sounds like a smart marketing play, I think it could be a bad move in the end if their talk is cheap. - Posted by: wil2liv Posted on: 08/15/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
