"The report indicates the bill doesn?t ?increase automobile fuel economy, a mandate to use more ethanol as a substitute for gasoline, or to require electric utilities to use renewable fuels.?"
-- And this is a HUGE problem. Increasing economy while decreasing emissions is where we need to go. I mean come on, even I know and accept that petroleum based propulsion is a needed evil, but let's make it less so! I find it damn funny that in the last 150 years we have been able to advance from horse and buggy to hyper-sonic travel, and yet fuel economy has stayed rather flat!? Something just doesn't add up.
After all in the 70's with the oil crisis we saw a huge jump in fuel efficiency and technology to support it. But as soon as the oil started flowing again, it's flatlined. I call bulls**t. It looks like s**t it smells like s**t, it's s**t. An increase in mandated economy and real economy is a must. The more efficient your vehicle the lower the taxes and licenses. The less efficient the more you pay. Seems simple enough to me.

As for substitute fuels, not a logical choice either, the ecological damage and the amount of energy required to extract usable fuels is not worth the price. No the path that should be followed is electrical power sources. In city areas, a grid system to power a vehicle and maintain a charge while in town, highways would be a free for all. Another solution is more mass transit along the lines of Mag Levs (hello! Japan and Germany BOTH use them quite efficiently and effectively!).
"In its current form the bill, says AP, ?includes tax breaks, loan guarantees and other incentives to develop renewable energy sources, hybrid gas-electric cars that would get their juice from the electricity grid, and new efficiency standards for an array of appliances and equipment. The energy legislation has been the focus of intense lobbying by both industry and environmentalists in recent days.?"
-- Bottom line, time to change the way we think and the way we behave. Going are the days of packing up and just driving East or West till you find a place to vacation. Going are the short hops to a store or a friends house by car. If you want to get a better picture of what is happening to our planet and what will transpire, read the recent Backpacker magazine, the picture is pretty bleak.
