I don't know what the enterprise architect meant by suggesting the use of a syndication technology to ensure interoperability. I think he meant something more like XML?

That being said, I believe that the point he was driving at is the key point in the issue, which is to say that, these days, we have open data formats and network availability that weren't as widely available in the past, and I think that's what really kept people locked in to suites.

I have to take this opportunity to proselytize for the Open Source community, and say that our application selection freedom depends heavily on developers' free access to data file formats, so don't support anything with a closed format, unless you're perfectly happy with every element of their suite!
