Meaningful reform

One. Allow insurance companies to offer any kind of plan
they want ranging from catastrophic to "we'll pay for
pimples," and price them accordingly. Eliminate the
requirement that insurance companies have to cover pre-
existing conditions without being able to charge higher
rates.

Two. Lower the costs of being in the medical business.
Relax paperwork requirements. Relax regulations. Institute
tort reform.

Three. Encourage HSAs.

Four. Have the consumer put price pressure on health care
providers by having him pay his own medical expenses out
of pocket. Doctors and hospitals need to make money to
stay in business. When patients start shopping around,
prices come down (HSAs help with this).

Let me give you a real-world example. My oldest wanted
his top two wisdom teeth pulled. Insurance denied him. He
went to the dentist and said: If I pay cash, what kind of
discount will you give me.

The dentist wanted his money and knew he'd go
somewhere else if they didn't work a deal. They gave him
10% off.

The above reforms will work. But the problem is, they give
the individual more freedom and take away government
power, so they are resisted by the statists, and, two, they
demand personal responsibility on the part of the
individual and are therefore resisted by those Americans
who have been turned into teat-suckers.
