Science, Research, and Data Are Not To Blame

for these rest on the scientific method. Instead, other social factors are to blame:

The irresponsibility of our public media in chronically sensationalizing news for the sake of entertaining rather than informing the public;

The caution practicing physicians must exercise to avoid liability in the over-litigous United States.

A third factor that serves to set up conditions for failure arise from the abuse of research for business ends. This was the case for Paxil, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) social anxiety disorder and antidepressant drug marketed by GlaxoSmithKline.

In pushing Paxil to market, Glaxo knowingly supressed clinical study data indicating that Paxil had dangerous side effects. Considering that Paxil alone brought Glaxo nearly $3 billion (!!) dollars in revenue in 2001, the profit motive for suppressing adverse information is obvious.
