The #1 cause of poor data transmission is distance from a base station, whether it be WiFi, cell tower, or anything else. The #2 and #3 causes are the same; it's not until you get to page 2 or page 3 that network considerations other than distance come into play.

If I'm out on the plains of St. Augustin none of them are going to be worth a damn -- and the fact that the nearest transport is going to take 45 minutes (by helicopter) makes it all pretty much moot anyway.
