Can contractors be part of health IT reform?
So standards did not evolve first as they did
with the Internet. Why? Because the customers
who should have been clamoring for EMR all
along - we the patients - never felt it worth
footing the bill. Why? Because there are
absolutely no pricing signals in the health-
care delivery market. And, what costs there
are get hopelessly obscured by our tax-
subsidized pre-payment, er, insurance systems.
So, I get an extra EKG or two as part of a
cardio work up? Do I care? Not really. The
cost to me is minimal. Just imagine what would
happen if we were required to pay for a full
multi-point inspection of our car with every
top off of our fuel tanks. This would never
happen. Right?

We need transparent price signals in the
health-care delivery market so that the market
can sort out and solve the many problems that
exist. Radical consumerism, to borrow
Berwick's term, is the answer.
