"How you educate people in healthy lifestyles and gain
compliance with doctor directives remains a question."

I'm of the opinion that first you need to be able to idenfy
patients who will be compliant physicians directives. Can
we look at the top of the directive list?

Stop smoking
Stop drinking
Stop over-eating
Stop eating foods that make you fat
Stop using drugs

Start exercising at least 3 times a week
Get regular checkups
And don't forget to floss.

There has been sufficient education in how to live a
healthy life. Maybe more in school in the future, but a
realist will be looking for those that WANT to get healthy
or better and will do what they need to do.

Then comes the mobile devices. The pragmatic approach
would probably be the smart phone that is currently
developing at a rapid pace. That's where you will find the
comfort level, even if multiple platforms need to be
supported. Other devices, like netbooks or the iPod touch
are also of potential. In other words, go to the consumer
instead of believing they will come to you.

Patients will collect data when they understand it is
important to their health. I now know I have Type 2
Diabetes and am vigorous in following the sugar levels.
Actually keep the data, along with insulin taken in an
iPhone app called Glucose Buddy. I can take a snapshot of
the graph for the week and email it directly to my doctor.

For me data collection is easy and I'm compliant because I
understand the risks - like "dead leg" (gets you an
amputation) and blindness.

But then I see the percentage of kids in K - 12 age groups
that are clearly overweight. We're talking Type 2 Diabetes
(the Adult type of diabetes) showing up in elementary
school.

Now you can start seeing the challenges getting the bulk
of the population to start interacting with either the
medical community or the available technology.
