ObamaCare sneaks a foot in the door
Existing insurance companies and health care providers worry about the government plan because it is the pre-ordained winner on the path to single payer, not because a government plan would be inherently superior.

Any Democrat worth their credentials believes the desired end state is single payer government health care. So the government plan is the 3rd step in that direction - Medicare and Medicaid being the first two steps. And the governemnt plan for the currently uninsured will not be allowed to fail - like Medicare and Medicaid in their early days - so that the private competition can be driven out of the space. Adequate resources (subsidies) will be provided, and reimbursements will be reasonable until there is no more competition. The game plan is pretty obvious, and has been perfected through past government take-overs.

What I don't understand is the appeal of single payer government medical care to so many people. Perhaps as a supporter you can explain it to a dense person like me who has experienced both ways, and prefers choice every time.

Real total costs will not be any less than they are now - especially when there is no longer an outside group to tax for subsidies. Like somebody wiser than me said, one problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money. A second problem with socialism is separating the deserving poor from the undeserving poor.

But I'm all ears to understand a very different point of view.
