There will be challenges
And that is one of the reasons why I believe in moving
from certification to licensing. By licensing I mean it as it
is known in the medical profession. Take out orderlies and
aides and just about everyone caring for you in a hospital
holds a professional license to practice.

You need to meet certain standards before being granted a
license and that license includes responsibilities as well as
authorities. If your license is pulled, well you can be an
orderly drug company detailer.

Move that type of licensing requirements to Health IT and
then the government can specify the level of interaction
required to obtain a license to offer Health IT projects. Pull
the license on companies that don't measure up.

I think that it is also important to understand that
companies can deliver good products that interact with
open source. OsiriX is a good example as it can import
various formats. An x-ray from my local hospital and the
images from a VA CT Scan are all on my Mac via OsiriX.

Sometimes providing access to data is what is going to be
critical. If a company comes up with a better MRI machine
I have no problem with them using proprietary software to
run the device - I just want to be able to access and import
the imaging data. I don't care if that is an electronic
import, or if I'm given a CD with all the imaging data on it.
With that link, I'm happy. Without it I say pull their license.
