Where to start?
Dr. Andrew Wakefield, whose study, trumpeted on 1,000 Web sites, claimed the preservative in MMR (Mumps, Measles and Rubella) vaccines given to infants contains mercury which causes autism.

Wakefield never claimed that preservatives in MMR caused autism; this may be due to the fact that although he's lying scum he isn't stupid enough to blame something that isn't there. MMR has never contained thimerosal. Personally, though, I think it's more because he was selling the idea that measles virus was setting up stealthy housekeeping in the GI tract and had already built business plans around that.

A vaccine court recently ruled that the standard MMR vaccine is not proven to cause autism

Actually, three different courts did. All in remarkably strong language; for a court whose purpose is to lean as far in the direction of claimants as possible, they were downright harsh -- going as far as to state, in one ruling, that claimants had been misled by their lawyers and physicians.

the decision last year in a Georgia case where a mitochondrial condition was said to have been aggravated by mercury in the vaccine, thus possibly resulting in a fever that left a girl autistic.

Please! At least do a little journalistic research. The MMR has never contained mercury. None. The finding in the Poling case was that the vaccination, possibly in conjunction with another of a series of infections at the same time, led to a high fever [1] which was more than Hannah's congenitally-limited system could handle, leading to brain damage (not autism.) The same results would most likely have occurred following any serious infection; her mitochondrial disorder leaves her horribly vulnerable to anything that demands more than normal output from her metabolism.

It?s possible that the vaccine is not the cause for the mercury getting into kids? systems.

No, it's not. Thimerosal has been gone from childhood vaccines for eight years now. Reported rates of autistic spectrum disorders have continued to increase Reported rates of other developmental delays (PDD-NOS) have continued to fall at the same rate; the totals have remained pretty much constant. Hmmm.

Would it really hurt to take a look?

We've looked. And looked, and looked. All of the studies that weren't being run by plaintiffs in vaccine lawsuits have come up blank, including whole-population studies in countries like Denmark with complete records of all health care.

In fact, there seems to be a statistically-insignificant suggestion that vaccines reduce autism rates. Not that you'll hear that from Jenny McCarthy.

In the meantime, all of that research into a vaccine-autism connection has come at the cost of other more promising research into the actual roots of autism and autistic-spectrum disorders and their treatment. It's about time to quit flogging a dead horse to satisfy a handful of fanatics and lawyers milking the system (see neurodiversity.com)

If you want more research into the will-o-the-wisp of vaccine/autism, how about paying for it out of funds that would otherwise be allocated for diabetes research? It's someone else's turn for a change.

[1] That's what vaccines do: trigger an immune response -- such as fever.
