The HIPAA police are watching
Indeed medicine lacks quite a bit in the adoption of new tech. However, your doctor is quite correct in citing HIPAA as a big part of the problem. Unfortunately HIPAA was designed by, let's say, less technically literate folks and has been poison IMHO to making a unified patient medical records system. It has many hospitals IT department in virtual lockdown mode where they will not allow any patient information outside their "virtual" fortress.

For instance (I am one ot the "techie" MD's out there) I asked our HIPAA police (sorry IT folks) if sending an email with patient information from our secure server to a yahoo address that I personally knew belonged to another MD caring for the patient constituted a HIPAA violation. I was told in no uncertain terms that would be a clear HIPAA violation because yahoo or google email servers are not considered secure.

Of course that is most of the problem with HIPAA, it piles on requirements for protecting patient information and makes no allowance for modern conveniences. How many of the zdnet bloggers have commented in the past how sacred patient information is and how is must be protected as ALL costs. Well, there ya go. This is a PERFECT example of well meaning legistlation written and enforced by clueless beaurocrats ultimately has unintended and counterproductive consequences.
