- A Health IT Czar sounds good to me
-
I don't believe that we will end up with one single
system, but multiple systems that will need to
work together.
There are two ways of looking at multiple systems.
There is obviously the multiple vendor approach
and then there is the sector approach.
The sector approach is where records are broken
into logical areas. Hospital systems are different
than outpatient pharmaceutical systems. In other
words, the local hospital needs a different system
than the local Walgreens. The issue then is to
determine where the various sector systems need
to integrate and where only a simple access is
needed.
Multiple vendors, I believe, will eventually be
required to be fully usable by all, regardless of the
level of proprietary features. Personally I would
have no pity if the health insurance companies
were required to meet strict standards related to a
single base system. Other areas, such as doctor's
records, imaging data plus reports, scheduled
appointments for procedures or tests, etc. should
all be universally available at a level designated by
the patient.
Personally, I have room on my iPhone for copies of
images from my last x-rays & CT Scans, imaging
and lab reports and even the surgical notes from
my last surgery. Why not move (over time) to a
point where I can carry this data with me, and
others can carry it on their MP3 players or
notebooks?
The only issue that concerns me is with the health
insurance companies and the increased ability to cherry pick their customers. With new
developments in generic testing this concern is
growing more all the time. One of the primary
needs, therefore, is to eliminate the ability of
insurance companies to deny coverage for pre-
existing conditions. Then we can move forward
with intelligent IT approaches to health care. - Posted by: Ken_z Posted on: 10/17/08 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
