Danish study
Dana, I'm not disputing their study, but a lot of the "red wine is helpful" buzz came from what is known as "the Danish Study". Denmark has an extremely immobile population where almost everyone drinks and it is almost exactly equal one-third beer drinkers, one-third liquor drinkers and one-third wine drinkers. The study tracked health over something like thirty years and showed wine drinkers definitely had a health advantage.

However, more detailed subsequent analysis several years after the initial report and buzz revealed that as a group the wine drinkers tended to have higher income than the other two groups. And, of course, people with higher income tend to have better access to healthcare and to use it more frequently.
