High profit margins are addictive...
...and when things are left to themselves they tend not to last long. This is a major reason why companies employ lobbyists in an attempt to defeat Adam Smith's invisible hand, while publicly espousing laizzez faire (free markets are only supposed to be free for vendors, not consumers).
