What's an "energy level"? Here's the quote:

Both of the exercise groups had a 20 percent increase in energy levels by the end of the study, compared to the control group.

[End quote.]

Perhaps it means that the people who exercized produced more adrenalin, and they were still affected after the workout concluded. If so, when they have rested for a while they will be more fatigued than those who didn't exercize.

Similarly, people generate endorphins to endure the stress of exertion. An individual's mood will be improved immediately after the workout, but that effect too will fade.

Quoting again:

However, the researchers found that more intense exercise isn?t the best way to reduce fatigue. The low-intensity group reported a 65 percent drop in feelings of fatigue, compared to a 49 percent drop in the group doing more intense exercise.

[End quote.]

Perhaps the high-intensity group burned through their endorphins more quickly.

One well-established fact about exercize: those who exercize significantly more than is their habit will become less active after the exercize is concluded. Their metabolisms also slow.

Probably because they are fatigued.

The number of calories burned over the course of the whole day will be approximately the same as if the person had not exercized at all.

Another well-established fact about exercize:

Even athletes, those to whom intense physical activity is natural, will lose the muscle adaptations that allow them to excel in a given sport within a few weeks. Even if they are engaging in other physical activity.

They regain their adaptations more quickly than someone who had never tried the sport is able to develop them, but what's not used is quickly forgotten.

In fact, an athlete who refrains from all physical activity for a few weeks cannot be told by bloodwork from someone who had spent the preceding years sitting in the same spot on the couch.
