MD's should hesitate to implement EHRs
As an investment banker covering health IT and a former health IT executive, the MD's have it right and everyone else has it wrong. EHRs have typically been found to add an hour a day to the physician's workload, while in practice they provide benefits to patients, hospitals, insurers, and regulators but usually hover around being revenue neutral for physicians; they increase charge capture but limit some visits and opportunities. While we all want what's best for patients, it is a mistake to push this at the expense of the physician's livelihood. The number of GP's in the market correlates with general health internationally, and it is foolish to penalize GPs and reward insurers and other players. The next time you are sick and have to wait three weeks for an appointment with your GP, you can blame in part EHRs for the delay.
