Even Middle Class Turn to Religion
I thought that it was interesting that you mentioned that many folks try to pray away their mental health issues. However, it's also a middle class phenomena as well. This is something I've experienced personally, frustratingly, through a couple of close friends and family members who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In each instance, rather than getting the pyschiatric medical assistance they need, these folks have gone and joined fundamentalist Christian churches to pray away their sins. The problem is with this particular disorder is that eventually things cycle back around, and the next manic cycle is always worse than the last, resulting in more financial and personal devastation for these "sinful" folks. For instance, I heard about one young lady who was abandoned for her "renewed sinfulness" by the church that had supposedly saved her just as she crashed into the depressive phase of her disorder. Fortunately for her, her roommate took her suicidal threats seriously and called 911 when she came home one evening to find the young lady unresponsive and locked in the bathroom of their apartment. As you pointed out, lack of mental health services and the stigma and ignorance attached to getting such services continues to cause undue pain and suffering, not to mention a waste of human lives and productivity, across the spectrum, poor and middle class alike.
